Separate the box family from the bag family

Plano’s storage catalog distinguishes 3600 and 3700 sizes and offers several box constructions within those families. Its Atlas backpack page specifies three included 3700 StowAway utility boxes. That establishes the intended tray family for that configuration; it does not establish that every deep, specialty or differently shaped 3700 box will fit in the same arrangement.

Before changing backpacks, put your actual fishing boxes in a stack and measure the assembled load. Include any protruding hinges and latches. If you alternate between a shallow terminal-tackle box and a deep lure box, evaluate both combinations. The less convenient combination is usually the one that reveals whether the bag really fits your routine.

Decide whether you need structure

The Atlas is described by Plano as a combination of hard and soft tackle storage, using a waterproof HDPE base and EVA panels. That construction is a different proposition from a flexible sack. A structured bag can make a repeatable place for boxes and tools, but it also keeps its shape when you remove some of the load.

This matters in a crowded kayak, a small vehicle footwell or a narrow bank-side space. Measure where the complete pack will sit, rather than assuming less tackle makes the bag proportionally smaller. If compact storage between outings is important, compare the empty bag’s structure as carefully as its loaded capacity.

Read water protection by component

Plano describes the Atlas base as waterproof and its phone storage as water-resistant. Those terms apply to specific components. They should not be combined into an assumption that the whole backpack tolerates immersion. A protected base is useful on damp ground; an open zipper or ordinary pocket remains a separate route for water.

Match protection to the consequences of a leak. Terminal tackle can be sorted into suitable boxes, while a phone and vehicle key deserve a separate protective pouch when water exposure is likely. Keep wet lures apart from dry tackle until they can be dried. Closing damp contents inside a sealed box does not remove the moisture already present.

Use your existing organization as the deciding test

Picture the sequence at the water: set down the backpack, remove the day box, retrieve pliers, then change the lure. A bag is working well when those steps require little rearranging. More external storage is less useful if a full pocket blocks the main opening or makes the pack unstable.

When comparing Plano options, record the included boxes separately from total advertised capacity. The maximum storage arrangement may use areas you need for clothing and food. Choose around a realistic day load and preserve one accessible space for the small items that otherwise migrate between pockets.

If your tackle moves between a boat and the backpack, identify the boxes that make that trip each time. Check those boxes against the backpack opening and leave them packed for the next outing. This keeps the boat-to-bank changeover to a box transfer instead of rebuilding a separate shore-fishing collection.
